Martial Traditions

As martial artist it is important to evolve. Technique and stances have been evolving all the way back to the ideas of Musashi. Today many martial artist continue to evolve their technique’s and training regime to meet modern demand and realistic situations. This is  a good idea. Why use a self-defense technique that does not work? I too have often trained in other areas to adjust technique and develop new methods of training. The one aspect of martial arts I believe should remain constant is the traditional values and cultural contributions. Recently I have met or seen instructors that have decided to remove some of the traditional aspects. Aspect like bowing, formally starting and ending class in ranks, and removing or changing the traditional language and flags of the martial arts they practice.

I understand the concept of modernity yet am not quite sure how removing the traditional value and cultural symbols from martial arts helps in modernity. In the modern world we still need structure, we still need respect, and we definitely need cultural awareness. Traditions can also build a sense of belonging and pride. Think of how many times people you meet will make a point of sharing what their cultural back ground is. Martial artists also do this. Even if a beginner in the arts is unsure of exactly what their dojang’s or organization’s full history is they will share with people the tradition. They will share how long it’s been in existence, how connected their instructors are, and will often begin sharing language terminology they learn. traditions keep the foundation strong. To have a succesful school or organization you first need a strong foundation. Keep evolving your training and technique but keep the tradition strong! this will bring you great success.
